How to create your own unique style by sewing your own clothes

I'm always in awe of women who can run up their own apparel. What a thrill it must be to create exactly the apparel that you want to wear. Sue is doing exactly that, so today I wanted to find out a flake more about how she does it and where she gets her inspiration from. Enjoy!

Tin y'all tell us a little chip more nigh yourself?

I alive and dear to create! I've e'er had a passion for textile arts, and these days I'm channeling all that positive energy into sewing my own wearable. If I'grand not sitting behind my sewing machine, I might exist getting messy with my paint box, or making my own beaded jewelry. I do need the balancing effect of reflective pastimes as well…I dearest yoga, and I tin easily lose track of fourth dimension reading a favourite mystery. My very techie husband and two loveable cats are the souls that keep me rooted in reality.

As a point of reference which age grouping do you belong to or perhaps yous are willing to share your age?

Tin yous tell united states a bit more well-nigh your blog A Colorful Canvas and why you created it?

I initially created A Colourful Canvas as my minor mode of catching up with social media in the 21st century. In September 2012, I was ready to challenge myself with something new. I'k decidedly non-techie, not even a cell telephone, and I was beginning to experience a chip similar a dinosaur. It was then that I had 1 of those light bulb moments and I decided that creating a web log would be the perfect platform both for learning new computer skills and for dipping my toes into the social media waters. What came every bit a surprise was the very positive influence my little web log has had on my own creative expression. What began as a humble potpourri of personal manner and lifestyle posts, has slowly adult into the blog I have today…a style and sewing web log. Information technology's here that I get creative with style, sewing, and all things arty and fun.

How would you describe your ain way?

I draw my style as classic with a twist. Although I gravitate to mainly archetype silhouettes, I dear adding an unexpected element. Most often, I shake things up with color, design mixing, or a whimsical fabric pick. Polka dots have me at hi, and I rarely get out the firm without an armful of my treasured bracelets.

What would you consider the most important components of your style?

Classic lines, cheery colours, blueprint mixing, and whimsy.

Where do you live and how does that influence your style?

I live in Vancouver, Canada. Vancouver has a pretty casual vibe….think Lululemon Athletica. That easy going vibe, and a rainy climate, does make for a lot of people dashing around in yoga pants and rain gear. I get it…at that place's a lot of fun, outdoor activities in my beautiful metropolis, and I do accept my fair share of both workout and casual wearable. Simply, I besides love getting dressed up, and I love seeing others practice the aforementioned. The often moisture weather does influence my fashion choices. Rain is wet, and in the winter, rain is wet and cold. For years, my winter wardrobe consisted of a typically dark toned raincoat along with serviceable footwear. For several months of the year, I basically covered up my colourful way. I am now in the process of creating a winter wardrobe that is expressive of my style yet still works for Vancouver's weather.

Do you feel y'all take a signature style?

Yeah, I remember then….when I am consequent with the above mentioned important way components, my outfits do experience very much a signature style.

You have the amazing talent to run up your own apparel. How do you decide what to create adjacent?

Thank you so very much for the compliment Sylvia! I don't have a single method of deciding what to sew adjacent. There are times when I fall in love with a fabric, and I'm inspired to create a garment. Still, spontaneously falling in love with a material isn't the most applied way to build a cohesive wardrobe, LOL. Twice a year, I get a footling more applied. When I switch over much of my wardrobe, packing away either my leap/summertime clothing or my autumn/wintertime clothing, I appraise what wardrobe holes {in that location's e'er some} need to be filled. That list gives me artistic direction. And…I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that I'm often inspired to create something based on a stitch-along theme, an inspiring web log mail service, or the rabbit hole known equally Pinterest.

How has creating your ain dress changed your style?

In a discussion…dresses! I rarely constitute a properly fitting dress in ready to wear, and therefore, I seldom wore them. At present my closet is filled with dresses that I can't wait to wear.

What do y'all enjoy most about sewing your own clothes?

Hands downwards, it's the creative expression that I savor the almost. When I get a garment correct {and yes, there have, and will keep to exist, fails}, information technology's every bit though my clothing is speaking on my behalf. I love that! I effort to give everything I sew a little scrap of whimsy; fifty-fifty some of my more than decidedly classic pieces have either a polka dot lining or a bird pattern in the pocket. Information technology'due south a design attribute that other people may non meet, but these quirky little twists absolutely brighten my twenty-four hours.

What would be your best advice for others who want to learn how to run up as well?

I would suggest reviewing your learning style kickoff. If you acquire best by case or easily on assistance, find a class or a private teacher. A lot of fabric stores offer classes, and some even accept in house sewing studios. If you lot exercise best flying solo, many of the Indie pattern companies write blog posts that give pace past footstep instructions for sewing their patterns. Whichever route you take, be sure to cull a pattern you love. Don't settle for sewing an apron if you never melt in the kitchen. A simple skirt is a very good first projection. You might be pleasantly surprised how quickly you lot can create your own ane of a kind garment!

What inspires your outfit choices the well-nigh?

Oooh, this could be the well-nigh difficult question. I only run across and then much inspiration all effectually me. I would say that colour always catches my heart offset…in wearable, accessories, fine art installations, you proper noun information technology.

Do you accept things like color profiling or trunk type into business relationship when y'all dress?

I have taken the Dressing Your Truth class, and found it to be of great value. Although not color profiling, there are elements in DYT that accept similarities. The biggest help that DYT has provided me is narrowing down the overwhelming amount of choice ane has when sewing one'south clothing. I was hands becoming overwhelmed in the fabric stores, and then either leaving empty handed, or coming home with fabric and a pattern that ultimately didn't feel right later on I had gone to the effort of sewing information technology. Now, I have a much amend understanding of what fabrications, textures, and weights, accommodate me best. I am also paying greater attention to my torso blazon. Not because I experience I take to, but considering I want to.

Has your way changed at all after turning xl?

Let me recall back, LOL. I have worn my way through a number of style phases over the years. So, yes it's truthful; later on turning forty my way changed. But, I think my way is e'er evolving and that whatsoever fashion changes that occurred afterward age forty were unrelated to my historic period, simply more about a deeper understanding of my true self.

Once again, I am actually interested in style, every bit much or more than when I was in my late teens and early twenties. I find information technology interesting that I at present view mode from a very dissimilar perspective than when I was younger. Thirty years ago, I was highly influenced by everything around and outside of me. Now that I am older and more than confident with whom I am, I find that I approach style more intuitively and with greater discretion.

Why is the way you wait important to you?

My third option is My Midnight in Paris Wearing apparel. It may not be the nigh flattering silhouette, just it's oh so comfy to wearable. I remember it'southward pretty special considering of the creative claiming that comes with making a re-create of a film favourite. Marion Cotillard wore the original clothes in the film, Midnight in Paris. Over again, I wear the dress frequently, and I sometimes feel almost equally though I'm Adriana, Marion'due south character. It'due south a groovy chat starter.

Do you follow trends? And if yeah, which trends excite yous at the moment?

Well, I don't oft intentionally follow trends. Having said that, seemingly out the blue, I decided that I must have palazzo pants, and I'm currently on the hunt for a vintage Japanese kimono. I imagine that these items are, or more likely were trends, so in answer to your question, yep I follow trends.

Do you have whatever way and style tips for women over 40?

I retrieve that dressing authentically is key to way and manner for women {and men} over 40. When we were young, information technology was easy plenty to follow the latest trends and/or fads. The one style fits all fashion ideology more or less worked. Information technology was equally though the wearable wore us, rather than the states wearing the wear. The more years we have on this planet, the more life experience nosotros have. I think it'due south such a wonderful souvenir that nosotros tin can let our clothing be a creative expression of our accurate selves.
